What is the due date of the Income Tax Return Filing?

The due date of filing your ITR is a date by which, the assessee can submit your Income Tax Return (ITR) without any late fee and penalty. In this post, we will know about the Income Tax Return Last Date. If the assessee fails to submit an Income Tax Return till the due date then he will be liable to pay Interest and Penalty.

It is very important for all taxpayers to remember the due date of filing Income Tax Returns. For different taxpayers, the due date varies according to their status under the Income Tax Act. Here’s the Income Tax Return Last Date for different categories of taxpayers.

The last date of filing an income tax return for a person whose accounts are not required to be audited is 31st July of the assessment year and in case accounts are required to be audited the due date is 31st October of the assessment year.

Income Tax Return Last Date For AY 2021-22

First Extension- On 20th May 2021 vide circular no. 9/2021, the government has extended the due date of ITR for the non-audited assessee to 30th September 2021 and for the audited assessee to 30th November 2021.

Second Extension- On 9th September 2021 vide circular no. 17/2021, the government has extended the last date of ITR for the non-audited assessee to 31st December 2021 and for the audited assessee to 15th February 2021.

Apart from the penalty for late filing of ITR, if the assessee has not filed the Income-tax Return before the due date, then he is also liable for Interest u/s 234A of the Income Tax Act.
